healthy snacksEating healthy food should become a habit, right from childhood. Explaining the importance of a healthy diet to kids therefore becomes essential.

Now that back-to-school time is almost here, many of you must be raking your brains and hunting for healthy snacks and lunch ideas for kids.

What should a lunch include to make it healthy?

Lunch has to be a balanced and wholesome meal and you should plan to include items that supply all necessary nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals in the required proportion.

Snacks could include just a few of the nutrients because they are typically in-between meals.

Making an assorted lunch –

It might be a good idea to make a list of food alternatives. You can then make a unique assorted lunch by mixing and matching them. This will please your children immensely because they get to have a new lunch combination every day!

Your catalogue of foods should take into consideration ease of packaging and your family tastes and preferences. The list could have carbohydrate foods like bread or crackers, protein stuff such as peanut butter, baked beans and so on. From this list, you can pick out items each day and quickly make up a complete lunch basket.

Popular kids’ foods and ideas about them -

Some of the most popular children foods include sandwiches, cheese, fruits, muffins, yogurt and peanut butter. Here is how to use them to satisfy your kids’ nutritional needs and also earn Brownie points from them:

Any fresh, seasonal fruit should form an ideal snack or lunch dessert. Apples, oranges, pears, grapes and bananas are general favorites. You can make an interesting snack by varying the fruits every day and serving them in different forms like cutting into interesting shapes or making into smoothies or serving as yogurt dips. Smoothies with fruits and tofu can make a protein & fiber rich part of lunch too.

Cheese can become a protein and calcium laden snack or turn into a component for a cheese sandwich lunch. Grilled cheese sandwiches are popular among most kids and by including whole grain bread slices, they can serve as a scrumptious yet healthy lunch.

Natural plain popcorn, popped fresh at home, is a fiber rich yummy snack. You can add a hint of favorite seasoning to tempt your kids. A hot favorite among children, peanut butter can be used to make yummy sandwiches. Just ensure that the product you buy is free from trans-fats.

Bake bread and muffins at home with added fruits and vegetables and pack them into a wholesome and filling lunch for your children. Frozen yogurt with fresh fruits would be a welcome snack treat for your peckish child.

You can find scores of sandwich recipes to choose from and packing one variety each day, along with a dessert and drink will certainly help to keep your child smiling at lunch. By adding vegetables, fruits, cheese, peanut butter and other nutritious alternatives to the sandwich, you not only provide your children with a nourishing meal but match it to their liking too.

How to be wise and healthy during holidays

Holidays are times when people let their hair down and generally run amok ignoring their workout schedules and causing havoc among the foods. Though vacations admittedly need to be enjoyed with no strings attached, if a week of reckless indulgence can cause sickness or wipe out the diet and exercise toil of months and months, would that be a wise deed? Certainly not! With just a little bit of planning and care it is possible to get the maximum pleasure from breaks while staying healthy and fit at the same time.

Planning the overall diet –

After the holiday destination is decided, it is wise to plan out what every day meal times are going to be like. People can consciously decide to eat whatever they want either at lunch or dinner but make up their minds to stick to healthy options the rest of the day.

Usually, it is easy to find breakfast suitable for fitness freaks in hotels. Folks can try eating a bowl of fruit sometime before lunch or dinner so as to minimize food quantities at the table. Drinking water throughout the day will not only serve to keep individuals hydrated, it will also help to avoid aerated drinks and sugary fluids which only add unwelcome calories. Choosing vegetable dishes or those with less fat can also help to reduce injudicious intake.

Acquiring health foods and snacks –

As soon as folks land up at the vacation spot, it would be a great idea to get a complete supply of healthy foods and snacks like whole grain products, fresh fruits, yogurt, nuts and so on.

Hotel rooms usually have refrigerators where these items can be stacked to prevent temptations when hunger pangs strike. It would also make sense to carry a few of these when going out for trekking or sightseeing so that the need to consume other junk foods can be eliminated or minimized.

Arranging for workouts –

Most of the resorts or hotels these days have gyms and swimming pool. So people can quite easily continue their exercise regimen without having to break their routine. In case they want to try out something different from what they are accustomed to do back home, folks might go on nature walks, treks, play outdoor games with the kids or indulge in any other activity that will keep them physically active.

Packing necessary accessories –

There are a number of workout equipment and accessories that are meant to be easily lugged around during travels. People can invest in such gear to have wider options to train during their vacations.

For instance, individuals taking time out at a sea side resort could take swim wear and those going to mountains could pack their comfortable sneakers to enjoy long treks without fatigue. They can also carry additional items like a simple skipping rope or portable, light weight gym kits.

Carrying first aid –

Carrying first aid as well as any regular and special medicines makes sense whenever people go on a holiday. This way even in the event of illness, they can get relief quickly, without having to run around in the holiday location.

Thus anyone can wisely plan their holidays and enjoy themselves without harming their health!

makle life easierI know that I over complicate things, almost everything. If there is some way for me to over think a situation I will do it.  It is like holding a brand new phone. You’re so concentrated on not dropping it that, what do you do, you end up dropping it.  So here is what I propose forget all the nit-picky details and relax.  Stop thinking and start doing.

Recently I ran eight miles. Yes I am bragging. You know what, I have earned the right to post about this accomplishment on my personal blog.  Here is how I did it.  I stopped thinking and kept running.  It about killed me. Every single step was a battle, but at the same time it was only just one step.  I kept that mentality the whole time. As long as I can take one more step I am alright.

The total time I spent running was about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Yes I am slow, but hey I finished. I knew that if I started thinking about the hills that were coming up or all the steps in between the end goal, I knew that I wouldn’t Finnish.  So I had to keep it simple: One step at a time.

The body is capable of doing great things. Just look at the Olympians right now.  Exercise is not beyond your physical capacity.  You are capable of accomplishing amazing things. Look at where you want to be, at what you want to accomplish and start toward it one step at a time. keep it simple do not over complicate the matter, just keep moving until you get there.

So let’s be honest, some of us worked out during the Spring and Winter months and some of us didn’t.  I myself find myself numbered with those who did not.  I don’t feel too bad about it, I had so much dang stuff to do with school and attempts at dating, that it just never seemed to fall into place.

The problem is, I’m super out of shape and it’s time already to go back to the lake and the swimming pool.  Let me just say, I’m not that excited.  However, I am excited that I finally have time to start exercising again.  The only problem is, it’s going to be rough coming back.  So to anyone who didn’t workout during the Spring and Winter, this one goes out to you.  This is how to get back into the working out habit:

First of all, what you’re going to want to do is make sure that you are utilizing all the fancy technology we have nowadays.  There are so many planners, apps, and other programs that we can use to calendar our workouts and write down our goals.  Make sure to take advantage of these things.

Second, make sure that when you do go to the gym, you are using your time wisely.  Life can be awful busy and times and you may only have time for a little 10 minutes workout.  If that’s the case, make sure to do everything you can in those 10 minutes.  Try circuits or interval training.

Third, take a friend along with you, a workout buddy.  The old adage “misery loves company” is true also in working out.  Well, maybe it’s not that bad, but having a workout buddy does help you develop that sense of responsibility.

Finally, feel free to break up your work outs.  Maybe you can only work out in 15 minute increments, three times a day.  Those times will stack up and by the end of the day, the results will be the same.

So these are just a couple tips for getting back into the workout groove.  Take them and run with it and make sure to enjoy this summer!

Okay readers, today I have a delicious recipe for you! This is seriously my very favorite dessert recipe, and I have made it probably 6 times in the last two months. It is so easy and has so few ingredients! I found this recipe here, but this is my adapted version! I make it slightly different than the original recipe, because I thought that the original was too sweet. I also make mine in a regular pie pan, but you could make individual servings if you prefer (it’s just a bit more work!) But either way, it is delicious and turns out amazing every time!

Yummy! Except, use chocolate cookie crust! It tastes much better!

Television has found its way into basically everyone’s home.  Now it is said that 54 percent of television-housing households have more than two TVs in their house.  If you are anything like me you will find yourself bored and watching TV at least once a day.  Television is the national past time, and why not? It is easy to do and it is mildly entertaining.  The problem is sometimes the entertainment from watching television is too mild, you know what I’m saying?

Do these in conjunction with your television viewing, to make for a more enjoyable experience

  1. Shoot Sticky Nerf bullets on the screen
  2. Do pushups, sit ups, squats and other calisthenics
  3. Compose a blog post about how to make television fun
  4. Read a book
  5. Wrestle with a friend
  6. Watch a second television at the same time
  7. Close your eyes and mute the sound. Try to guess when the commercials come on
  8. Talk loudly with a friend
  9. Rehearse karate routines
  10. Go out side and pretend to watch television whilst actually doing something completely different

Seriously though exercising while watching television is much more stimulating than just sitting and watching television.  Most of us cannot do push ups or sit ups throughout an entire television show, and this leaves us bored through the remainder of the program.  That is why i would suggest you get a treadmill for your TV.  They allow you to walk or run while still actually focusing on the soap operas you watch for no good reason.

So, in light of the academic year coming to close and summer just being on the horizon, the subject for today is ‘getting an education and not just a degree.’  This is a an interesting subject because although it is largely hushed and swept under the rug, it is highly relevant to anyone who goes to college or is planning on going to a college.  Read the rest of this entry »

The concept of online dating is pretty tricky. The concept of dating is complicated enough, and when social media, hosting websites and screen names gets added to it, the result is system of extremely personal communication with privacy safeguards similar to those of a Saran-Wrap changing booth.

Dating: 50 years ago, dating was a phase in a process that started with boys pulling girl’s pig tails and moved towards lifelong marriages. At least that was the ideal.

Modern society has largely changed its purpose for dating; instead of dating being a means to an end it has become an end in and of itself. This just means that people tend to date without an eye for commitments and date just to have fun dating.

With this new way of dating, many couples have longer “courtships” that do surprisingly little to prepare them for a lifelong marriage. There is strong evidence that people look at the dating scene differently.

If dating were in preparation for marriage, couples wouldn’t spend ten years in a relationship and then get divorced after one year of marriage. It’s like the life of a perpetual college student who takes classes for years but is in no way prepared to enter the workforce.

Online: Online dating is basically a concept that represents a tool. That tool which can be used as a social medium. There are a countless ways that individuals can interact with each other by using the internet, and online dating doesn’t necessarily have to involve online dating websites or social media sites with dating applications.

Online Dating: When the current dating mindset is combined with technology that allows any individual to be a (photo-shopped) social butterfly, the result is… well, online dating. Online dating exists, and people who stoop to online dating are usually thrilled to be matched and paired, for a short time, with other people who have stooped to online dating.
